Early Clinical Experience with Hydroxyapatite-Coated Hip Implant

Abstract
The ABG (Anatomic Benoist Girard) cement-free hip implant with hydroxyapatite was developed to obtain primary fixation from an enhanced anatomic design and secondary biological fixation from hydroxyapatite in total hip
arthroplasty.
The ABG cement-free hip implant was implanted in twenty-two patients between January 1992 and April 1993. Twenty-two cases had a minimum of one year of follow up, including analysis of the clinical and radiographic data.
@ES The results were obtained as follows:
@EN 1. The mean Harris Hip Score increased from 47 points preoperatively to 96 points at last follow up.
2. On the acetabular side, nomigration and no changes in the angulation of the cup were observed. Periacetabular radlolucent line was found in 9% of the cases. Endosteal bone apposition was found in 54% of the cases.
3. On the femoral side, radiolucent line was seen around the uncoated distal part of the stem in 68% of the cases, and cancellous densification in Zone 2 and 6 were seen in 73% of the cases. Calcar resorption was found in 46% of the
cases,
Cortical hypertrophy was present in 18% of the cases.
4. The early clinicaland radiographic results are encouraging, although a longer follow-up period is necessary.
